Learning the English language is important in today’s world. When you consider that approximately 375 million people in the world speak English as a mother tongue, an equally large number of people speak English as a second language, and around 750 million people speak English as a foreign language, English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. In addition over one billion people currently learn English. In fact, it is estimated that one in four people learn English as a foreign language and you could be one of them.

In today’s international market learning English as a second language has almost become a necessity as English is the language of communication in Education, Research, International Business, and International Politics. Most academic publications across a range of fields are in English. Therefore to study English, learners need to look no further than the internet or media which is strongly dominated by the English language globally.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) - part of the UK Government’s Skills for Life initiative, this nationally accredited qualification is aimed at short and long term visitors to the UK who wish to access further education, vocational training or employment in the UK.  Candidates including students, refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and visitors from the European Union or anywhere in the world. ESOL  courses are taken by more than 3 million peoples every year in over 130 countries worldwide. Thousands of Higher Education Institutions in the UK, USA, Canada, EU, Australia, New Zealand accept several ESOL  certificates/   Diplomas as their University Entry level.

British Ministers Voices about importance of ESOL:-

The Education Minister Bill Rammell said. "The promotion (ESOL-Skills for Life in the UK) of community cohesion should be given highest priority”.

“Because it is so important, we are spending around £ 300 million a year investing in English For Speakers of Other Languages-ESOL provision.”- John Denham, Minister of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills-UK.

Another interesting thing is that the British Govt. capped spending £10 Billion per year to fostering the ESOL-Skills for Life in the UK while over 7 million adults in Britain have difficulties with literacy and numeracy. It is estimated that around one million of these adults have a first language other than English.

IELTS is a test jointly managed by the University of Cambridge-ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Australia. This test is accepted by 1300 Universities, Colleges, Institutions, Professional organizations in the United Kingdom, USA, EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, including the immigration departments of those countries. IELTS  is only a test that provides an evaluation of English validated one/two years for those who wish to study or train in English abroad. Whereas ESOL certifications/Diplomas are not only a test, its validity runs for life time as this award is recognized world wide as DIPLOMA CERTIFICATION. This reason ESOL certifications/Diplomas would be accepted globally wider than IELTS.
